De-Bunked
All of a sudden I just had to do it...
For the last two weeks or so, I've been in de-cluttering mode again... cleaning mode, getting rid of anything unnecessary mode, making major changes in my life mode (i.e., becoming a morning person... not yet, don't worry). And tonight I had to make a change in the kids' bedroom.
It was time to take apart the bunk bed.
Our kids have done really, really well with their bunk bed. They have never fallen out or had any accidents regarding the top bunk, etc. It has been completely safe and enjoyable for them. I also really believe in having them in the same room as long as is appropriate for a brother and a sister. I love that they have to learn to get along, share a space, clean the room together, etc. Good for their relationship with each other and good to learn how to get along with others at an early age.
Lately, however, they've had a bit of trouble staying in their room at night. One or the other of them would get out of bed for some reason (scared, potty, water, sick, etc.) and while getting out of the bunk bed, would rattle the entire thing and wake the other up. And then it's nearly impossible to get them both to go back to sleep when they're both awake.
So it was time to make a change.
Thankfully, our bunk bed comes apart nicely into two separate beds. So, we took it apart and put them side by side with about 3 feet in between. The kids absolutely love it. They wanted to go to bed immediately in their 'new' beds... of course it was like 6pm, so we told them they had to stay up a little longer.
Now my only worry is that being able to see each other on the same plane of reference that they will play or jump from bed to bed or create some other kind of young child mischief. But I suppose we'll cross that bridge when we come to it... which will likely be tomorrow!
For now, however, they are joyfully sound asleep in their new beds, hopefully dreaming delightful dreams about our upcoming trip to Africa.
Nightie night... sweet dreams.
