They've 'known' each other their whole lives... yes, every moment of their short 6 1/2 years.  However, they've never lived in the same country... let alone on the same side of the world. Their fathers have been best friends for decades, and their mothers gladly married into this uniquely close family of friendship.  So it is natural that these two young boys, born just months apart, would become immediate buddies for life.  They've visited and played, cramming every imaginable ounce of fun into the all-too-brief hours their globe-trotting parents allow.  The goodbyes are always filled with tears and claims of how much each misses the other, talking about the future and reminiscing about the past. 

But now, they've taken the next step in a long-distance friendship - they've become pen pals.

Yes, Clark and Noah are pen pals.  Of course, gone are the days when being pen pals actually required pens.  Modern pen-pal-ism requires mothers to type, computers to send, and web-cams to make that final, all-personal connection. 

Chatting about their toys, their sisters, their friends, and the bullies that torment them, Clark and Noah 'write' back and forth, learning about the way the other lives and the culture in which each is making his way in this quickly changing world.

Some recent questions include:

  • How fast does your dog run?
  • Do they have corn dogs in India?
  • What is your bus number?
  • What did you get for Christmas?
  • Do you like Legos?
  • When are you coming to visit?

Oh the joys of being a 6-year-old boy.  Running down the beach, getting coffee with dads, jumping off things, jumping into things, jumping around things, finding the biggest puddle around, faces turning red from the cold weather that couldn't possibly stop the enjoyment they have when they're together ... 

Where will life lead them?  Who knows... But together as friends they can lean on each other for love and support, hoping that their paths cross again very soon.  And until that day, emails and letters will have to suffice, describing in 6-year-old details the events of every day.

What a beautiful description of our boys. Isn't it the neatest thing to watch your kids venture out into the world and make that kind of connection? It really reminds me that He has plans for them and what a privilege it is to watch them unfold. Thanks for putting it into words at this moment in time.

On Thanksgiving

I read an article this afternoon titled, “You have permission to not be thankful this Thanksgiving”.     The author’s point was that no one should have to force themselves to be grateful just because a date on the calendar prescribes that we should be thankful.     She even brought in to her argument the fact that “the original Thanksgiving” (think Pilgrims and Native Americans) was a horrible affair sans turkey or any feelings of thanks or of giving or of compassion and humanity.     True enough, I suppose.                 It’s election day here in America.     A day of red, white, and blue.     Many people have already cast their vote, but others are waiting in lines at polling places, eager to fulfill their civic duty.
