I have really come to appreciate so very much the sweet early morning hours experienced because of jet lag. It has become mommy and Claire time.
So far we have all been able to sleep fairly well through the night - a few premature wakings have been followed by the quick return to slumber. Until, that is, around 5.00a when Claire is also no longer able to keep her cute little eyes shut any longer. So, it is at this still-dark hour that her little feet pitter patter into our room and she crawls into our bed hoping that her mama will get up with her to start the day.
We stroll leisurely into the living room and she is extremely eager to watch whatever cartoons might be on TV at that crazy hour of the morning. There are only Hindi-language shows on, but that does not matter to her. She sits next to me on the couch in her cute cupcake-pattered pink nightgown, with her cute feet crossed together, and stares blankly at the screen in a state of overall contentment.
My coffee (immediately brewed upon my exit from the bedroom - Starbucks Extra Bold Italian Roast) helps me to stay awake while I enjoy the portability of my pink Mac to check sports scores, read about Martha Stewart's latest escapades, or create blog entries of my own. Trying to drink as much water as possible to rehydrate and to accumulate my daily food diary water total, I answer Claire's sweet requests for an early morning breakfast of strawberries (fresh from yesterday's market) or popcorn (leftover from last night's Sunday night dinner specialty).
By this time, Maggie and Celia have emerged from the bedroom and Claire wants to use Celia as a pillow... but I make her settle for using her as a friendly couch companion instead. We sit together - the three of us comfortable and happy - eagerly awaiting the sun's entry onto the horizon, and staying as quiet as possible until Daddy and Clark join us in the new day. A delicious breakfast of oatmeal and blueberries or multi-grain corn flakes is on the schedule by 7.00am, but for now we simply enjoy sitting quietly and contemplating the new day.
Such sweet, sweet times with a sweet, sweet girl. Thank you, God, for jet lag and the early morning.
