Cookie Monsters!

We have had a delightful time baking Christmas cookies this year!

We've already enjoyed two 'innings' of this fun holiday activity. Last weekend we went over to LaVonne's house to have a mom/kids day of baking. We made cut-out sugar cookies and chocolate 'spritz' cookies... both were very tasty and all five children had fun rolling the dough and cutting out their favorite shapes. A new holiday tradition, I think!

Tonight we had the second go-round... Every year near Christmas I like to send Christmas cookies as the snack for the kids' 'snack duty' for their class at school. Thankfully this month both Clark and Claire have snack duty on the same day, so we spent 2 1/2 hours this afternoon/evening baking more sugar cookies to take for class... EIGHT DOZEN... actually. Wow, that's a lot now that I realize how many we made! Of course all the 'good' cookies will go in to the kids at school and all the 'mutant' cookies (i.e., gingerbread men or teddy bears with limbs missing... snowmen with body smashed in, etc... ) stay at home. We have about 1 dozen left for ourselves which is good for me because I LOVE EATING CHRISTMAS COOKIES... but of course should not have more than 1-2 per day. Hopefully our one dozen mutants will be gone soon.

The kids had tons of fun rolling the dough and adding more flour if it was sticky... or more water if it was dry. By the end of the evening, of course, Claire's 'ball' of dough was a complete disaster, not suitable for baking. But, hey, it's the fun of the activity that counts and the time spent together, right??

Next week we move on to more 'complicated' cookies that I've collected from the Food Network's 12 Days of Cookies email mailer. YUM! Can't wait!

How fun - and I love the idea of mutant cookies! It would make for a great children's story. Hmmm . . .

Another fun thing I love to make with my kids is candy cane bark. Don't know if you can get candy canes and white chocolate in India, but the kids used to love unwrapping the candy canes and then smashing them into bits (putting them in ziplock bags and rolling over them with the rolling pin works well). You melt the white chocolate, add a little bit of peppermint oil and mix in the candy bits. Spread it on a cookie sheet covered in wax paper and freeze. Then break into chunks to serve. Fun and colorful little treat. (You need to keep it refridgerated after making it.) PS - that's a Martha recipe from years ago!

Aahh, mutant cookies. We will be making our traditional cut-out cookies this week...plenty of opportunity for mutant gingerbread boys, angels and such.

Thanks for leaving a comment and saying hi. It was a memorable evening indeed.

Merry Christmas to all of you. We'll be thinking of you.
