Birthday Joys

Happy Birthday to me!

I love birthdays. I especially love my birthday!

Here is a little list of special birthday joys I got to experience this year on my birthday -- February 27, 2007.

1. Pizza coupons sent via the internet from America by my Dad. Arrived last Friday... pizza night... and so we used them immediately to start the birthday-weekend celebrations off right!

2. The soup buffet with Megan (see previous post!)

3. Fitting into size 8 clothes that Kevin bought me for my birthday.

4. Having three chocolately and delicious birthday cakes -- one from Megan, one from Kevin, one from Kala. The food diary was happily locked away in the dungeon!

5. Eating at my favorite Chinese restaurant (Golden Dragon at the Taj Krishna) for my birthday dinner... having some fabulously delicious food including dimsum, spare ribs, beef (!), chicken, prawns and of course dessert... both chinese inspired dessert, as well as the birthday cake our former travel agent friend Kala called in for me. (Food diary? What food diary??!?!)

6. Birthday fireworks at the birthday dinner -- When former travel agent friend Kala called the restaurant to arrange the cake, she said to make it a 'special evening' for me. The hotel staff therefore sat us next to the window and when they were giving me the cake, they lit off some fireworks right outside the window for us to enjoy. Of course we didn't actually know they were for me until the waiter pointed out the window and said, 'Uh, ma'am, those are for you." It was nice and pretty funny, too.

7. Many, many greetings via Skype since I entered my birthday in my online profile and it gave members of my contact list a prompt that it was my birthday. Unexpected indeed! And delightful at the same time.

8. All the cute/funny/serious e-cards, carefully mailed or hand delivered greeting cards, and meaningful small gifts that came my way.

So there you go, a small sampling of the joys I experienced on my birthday this year. Thanks to all of you who made it a special day for me.

On Thanksgiving

I read an article this afternoon titled, “You have permission to not be thankful this Thanksgiving”.     The author’s point was that no one should have to force themselves to be grateful just because a date on the calendar prescribes that we should be thankful.     She even brought in to her argument the fact that “the original Thanksgiving” (think Pilgrims and Native Americans) was a horrible affair sans turkey or any feelings of thanks or of giving or of compassion and humanity.     True enough, I suppose. I would never argue that someone should be forced to be thankful.     I would never say that someone should be compelled to give thanks for things that they don’t have or for things which have been ripped from their grasp.     Forced joy is not joy.     I get that.   However, if I’m going to argue about anything, I would choose to argue passionately about one thing in this regard.  And here's the reason:   I ...

Thoughts on Election Day

                It’s election day here in America.     A day of red, white, and blue.     Many people have already cast their vote, but others are waiting in lines at polling places, eager to fulfill their civic duty. It’s a day that’s supposed to be a celebration of democracy.     It’s supposed to be a day when we exercise our right to choose leadership for our country that will represent us and help to guarantee that our voices are heard.     It is a day that women and people of color have fought for the right to participate in.     Fought for the right to be included.     It’s a day that’s supposed to bring us together in unity as a nation with hope for a future that will bring us the promises our forefathers, white, male and slave owners they may have been, founded this nation to bring to reality.                ...
