Road Report

I am presently sitting in a delightfully middle of the road hotel, just about ready to go to bed, watching the last few minutes of American Idol... while emailing, booking airline tickets and blogging. Yes, I am a compuslive multi-tasker. Kevin, Clark and Claire are all in bed, very tired after our day of driving today.

We are on the way to a wedding which is on Saturday on the west coast of this delightful nation. We decided that this would be a fun time to take a family road trip rather than flying or taking the train. So! This morning we left at 6.00a before the sun was up... jumped in the car with plenty of snacks jammed into every nook and cranny of our recently repaired vehicle.

Before us lay a 10-hour southwesterly drive.

Clark and Claire were strapped safely into their car seats with toys and snacks within reach. Thankfully and miraculously they were incredibly well behaved for the entire drive today, even taking a nap without a fight. Wow, what a blessing!

Kevin drove the whole way through the flatlands and through hills that looked oddly enough like central/eastern Oregon. We saw amazing rock formations, a variety of animals, and thousands of trucks loaded down with everything from train parts to hay to partially assembled autorickshaws. We nearly killed a chipmunk, had to maneuver our share of cows and buffaloes in the middle of the road, and marvelled at the fact that in the middle of a wonderfully wide, smooth new superhighway, some highway authority had put speed bumps.

My personal favorite part (well, sort of) was noticing the beautiful new rest stops that were along the way. The Reliance company has opened rest stops with gas stations, mini marts, restaurants... and the ever important restroom facilities which were mostly clean and not at all frightening. We stopped at two (or was it three) of these places along the way. Somehow I could always 'hold it' until I saw the lovely blue, green and white Reliance logo coming around the next bend.

Overall, we had a very smooth day of travel which ended in a comfortable hotel and an early bedtime.

Hopefully more from our road report tomorrow.
